Quick answer
The Hilux Surf never sold new in NZ, AU or the UK, so almost nothing is listed for it by name, but plenty fits. The best options for a Surf: tailored heavy duty covers made for the Surf/4Runner seats (we sell NZ made canvas seat covers for the 2nd and 3rd gen), 90-Series Prado listings (the KZN185 shares its platform, so Prado 90/95 covers cross-fit with minor compromises), or quality universal covers if you're on a budget and can live with a looser fit.
Heavy duty 12oz canvas, made to measure in Auckland for the KZN185, RZN185 and VZN185. Grey or black, 3 year warranty.
Why seat covers matter more on a Surf than most trucks
Every Surf on the road is 25–40 years old. Factory fabric is sun-faded, foam is crumbling, and JDM velour does not love wet dogs, sandy wetsuits or fencing gear. Replacement OEM trim is effectively unobtainable. A good set of covers is the difference between preserving an interior and re-trimming one, and re-trimming costs NZ$1,500+ a row.
What fits what: by generation
2nd Gen (KZN130 / LN130 / YN130, 1989–1995)
Front buckets are a common Toyota shape of the era. Tailored 2nd gen covers fit well, and Hilux N60/N80-era listings sometimes cross over. The 50/50 split rear bench with headrests is the hard part; universal rear covers rarely sit right around the fold mechanism. Our 2nd gen canvas covers are made to measure for the 2nd gen seats, front and rear.

3rd Gen (KZN185 / RZN185 / VZN185, 1996–2002)
The KZN185 shares its chassis and much of its interior architecture with the 90-Series Prado, so covers listed for a Prado 90/95 will usually go on with only minor bunching at the base bolsters. Tailored 3rd gen covers, like our 3rd gen canvas set, avoid that compromise entirely. 4Runner (3rd gen, US market) listings also fit, same seats.
Materials: canvas vs neoprene vs PU leather
- Heavy canvas: the farm/trade choice. Water resistant, near-indestructible, takes dogs and tools. Firm feel, slightly slippery when new. This is what we recommend for working trucks and surf wagons.
- Neoprene: wetsuit material, soft and grippy, great for water sports use. Less abrasion-resistant than canvas.
- PU leather: the tidy-looking budget option all over Amazon/AliExpress. Fine for a mall-crawler, cracks with UV over a few NZ summers.
Pricing guide (NZ)
- Universal sets: NZ$80–150. Loose fit, no headrest tailoring, airbag compatibility varies.
- Mid-range tailored: NZ$150–300 per row.
- Heavy duty tailored canvas: buy once, cry once. Our NZ made canvas covers are NZ$259 for the driver seat, NZ$399 for the front pair and NZ$699 for the full set. Made fresh for each vehicle, so allow 3 to 4 weeks before dispatch. We ship them worldwide.
Three things to check before you buy
- Side airbags: late 3rd gen Surfs (SSR-X/SSR-G, 1998+) can have seat-mounted SRS airbags. Covers must have airbag-compatible seam release on the outboard bolster. Never run non-rated covers over an airbag seat. Our canvas covers are made to suit Surfs with seat-mounted airbags.
- Headrest and armrest cutouts: Surf rear benches have headrests; many cheap sets don't. Centre fold-down armrests need a slot.
- Rear bench split: 50/50 on the Surf. A one-piece universal rear cover will fight the fold mechanism every time you drop the seats.

FAQ
Do Toyota Hilux (ute) seat covers fit a Hilux Surf? Usually not. Despite the name, the Surf's seats are the 4Runner/Prado family, not the Hilux ute's. Check for Surf, 4Runner or Prado 90 fitment instead.
Will Prado 90/95 seat covers fit my KZN185? Yes, with minor bunching. The platforms are shared. Front seats fit well; rear bench fitment varies by brand.
Are seat covers safe with side airbags? Only if rated airbag-compatible. If your Surf has seat-mounted SRS bags (badge on the outboard bolster), only fit covers with a tested deployment seam.
