Quick answer
For the Hilux Surf KZN130 and KZN185, rear bar / tow bar options fall into three buckets: (1) factory tow bar or basic aftermarket tow bar (NZ$300–$600, fits anything, 2,000 kg braked tow rating); (2) heavy-duty rear bar with integrated tow point for off-road use (Aussie-style, NZ$900–$1,800, similar tow rating with much better departure angle and rear protection); (3) high-clearance plate bumper like Coastal Offroad's DIY rear kits (NZ$1,800–$3,000 for kit + welding, best off-road clearance, optional spare wheel and jerry can mounts). Towing capacity for any 1KZ-TE Surf is 2,000 kg braked / 750 kg unbraked, that doesn't change with the bar, only the towing point geometry does.
What's the factory tow capacity?
The Hilux Surf 1KZ-TE (KZN130 and KZN185) is rated for:
- 2,000 kg braked trailer
- 750 kg unbraked trailer
- 75 kg tow ball download (max)
The 5VZ-FE V6 (VZN185) shares the same chassis ratings. Adding a heavier-rated tow bar doesn't increase the truck's rating, it's chassis-limited, not tow-bar-limited.
For practical use: 1.5-tonne caravans, single-axle trailers, light boats. Don't try to tow a heavy plant trailer or twin-axle caravan with a stock Surf, you're at the chassis limit and the truck will struggle on hills.
Option 1: Basic tow bar
The cheapest path: a tow tongue and receiver bolted to factory mounting points behind the rear bumper. The OE Toyota tow bar (rare in JDM imports) and most aftermarket equivalents fit this category.
- Cost: NZ$300–$600 fitted
- Rating: matches factory 2,000 kg braked
- Look: doesn't change the truck's appearance much
- Use case: occasional towing, no off-road ambitions
This is the right call if you're not modifying anything else and just need to pull a small trailer or boat.
Option 2: Heavy-duty rear bar with integrated tow point
This is the touring/overland choice. A wraparound steel bar that replaces the factory rear plastic bumper, integrates a tow point, and usually includes recovery points and sometimes a wheel carrier.
Why people choose this: - Better departure angle, the factory bumper hangs low and gets dragged on every steep descent. A proper rear bar tucks up. - Real rear protection, the factory bumper crushes if you reverse into anything firmer than a hedge. - Recovery points, rated 4.75-tonne hooks, not the embarrassing factory tie-downs. - Optional wheel carrier or jerry can mounts, most touring bars offer add-ons.
Brands worth looking at:
- TJM, full rear bar with optional swingaway wheel carrier
- ARB, premium price, premium fit
- MCC4x4, Aussie-made, mid-range
- Ironman 4x4, solid value option

Option 3: Coastal Offroad DIY plate rear bumper
The build-it-yourself path. Coastal Offroad make CNC-laser-cut rear bumper kits specifically listed for the 3rd gen 4Runner / Hilux Surf, both High Clearance and Hybrid Plate configurations.
You weld it together (or hand it off to a fabricator). The result: better off-road geometry than any bolt-on bar, with mount points for spare wheel, jerry cans, and recovery gear.
Trade-offs: time and welding skill in exchange for cost savings versus a finished ARB or TJM. The look is also different, plate bumper, not tube bar.

Three things to check before you buy
- Tow ball geometry, different bars sit the tow ball at different heights and rearward distances. If you tow a specific trailer, measure your current tow ball position and match it.
- Spare wheel access, some rear bars block access to the under-body spare. If your spare lives under there (KZN130 commonly), check that the bar accommodates it or budget for a swingaway carrier.
- Trailer wiring loom, JDM imports often don't have a factory tow loom. Add NZ$150–$300 for a 7-pin or 13-pin wiring kit and proper trailer fuse.

FAQ
What's the maximum towing capacity of a Hilux Surf? 2,000 kg braked / 750 kg unbraked for the 1KZ-TE. The 5VZ-FE V6 has the same chassis rating. Tow ball download is 75 kg max.
Can I fit a 4Runner rear bar to my Hilux Surf KZN185? Yes, same chassis, same mounting points. Anything tagged "1996–2002 4Runner rear bar" fits the KZN185.
Does fitting a heavy rear bar increase my tow capacity? No, the chassis rating is fixed. A heavier bar just gives you better off-road geometry and a more secure mounting point.
Do I need a wiring kit for the trailer plug? Almost certainly yes if your Surf is a JDM import. Expect NZ$150–$300 for a quality kit fitted.
Is a Coastal Offroad DIY kit worth it for the rear bumper? If you can weld (or have a mate who can) and you're going down the off-road build path, yes. The ground clearance and finish are excellent for the price.
