Quick answer
The three engines that came in the 2nd and 3rd gen Hilux Surf each take different oil and a different volume:
- 1KZ-TE 3.0L turbo diesel (KZN130 / KZN185), 7L oil capacity (8L with a filter change). Use 15W-40 diesel-spec mineral oil in warm climates, 10W-40 semi-synthetic for mixed use, or 5W-40 full synthetic for cold winters. Spec: API CF or better.
- 3L 2.8L naturally aspirated diesel (early LN130), 6.5L with filter change. 15W-40 or 10W-40 diesel-spec oil. Spec: API CD or better.
- 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 petrol (VZN185), ~5.2L (5.5 US quarts) with filter change. 5W-30 for modern use; 10W-30 if you're running the factory-era spec.
Service interval is 5,000 km if you tow, off-road, or daily a high-km truck, 10,000 km for road-only easy use.

Which engine do you have?
Quick decoder before you buy oil:
- KZN130 (2nd gen, 1993–1995) → 1KZ-TE
- LN130 (2nd gen, 1989–1993) → 2L-TE early, then 3L (later models)
- KZN185 (3rd gen, 1995–2002) → 1KZ-TE
- VZN185 (3rd gen, 1995–2002) → 5VZ-FE V6 petrol
- RZN185 (3rd gen, 1995–2002) → 3RZ-FE 2.7L petrol (rare outside Japan)
Chassis code is on a plate in the engine bay. The 1KZ-TE is by far the most common engine you'll see in 2nd and 3rd gen Surfs outside North America, so most of this guide focuses there.
Oil change procedure (all engines)
The procedure is essentially identical for the diesel and V6 engines, only the spec sheet changes. Plan on 30–45 minutes if you've done one before, an hour if it's your first.
You'll need: new oil (correct grade and quantity for your engine), new oil filter, new sump plug washer, 14mm socket for the sump plug, oil filter wrench, drain pan with at least 8L capacity, funnel, gloves, and rags.
- Warm the engine for 5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and pulls more contaminants with it.
- Park level, chock the wheels, jack up the front and put it on stands. The 1KZ-TE sump plug sits on the driver's side under the engine; the 5VZ-FE sits centrally.
- Position the drain pan, crack the sump plug with a 14mm socket, and let it run for 10 minutes minimum. Don't rush this, the last cup of oil holds the highest concentration of soot and metal.
- Replace the sump plug washer (one-time-use copper crush washer, don't reuse it) and torque the plug to 35 Nm for the 1KZ-TE, 39 Nm for the 5VZ-FE.
- Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench. Have the drain pan under it, there's about a cup of oil that comes out.
- Smear fresh oil on the new filter's gasket, hand-tighten it on, then snug it another ¾ turn with the wrench. Don't gorilla it.
- Refill through the filler cap on the rocker cover. Add 6L for the 1KZ-TE (you'll top up the rest after running), 4.5L for the V6.
- Run the engine for 30 seconds, shut down, wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick. Top up to between MIN and MAX, don't overfill, especially on the diesel.
1KZ-TE 3.0 turbo diesel, what you actually need
This is the engine in 90%+ of 2nd and 3rd gen Surfs sold outside North America. It's also the engine with the most owner debate around oil choice, so here's the practical version.
Capacity: 7.0L drain only, 8.0L with filter change. Aim for the dipstick MAX rather than the bottle count.
Grade: Toyota factory spec is API CF (or better) diesel oil at 15W-40. That's still the right answer for a healthy engine in a warm climate. Three live-and-let-live alternatives:
- 10W-40 semi-synthetic, most popular choice for mixed AU/NZ conditions. Better cold start than 15W-40, similar protection at temperature.
- 5W-40 full synthetic, better cold-weather flow, longer drain interval potential, more expensive. Worth it if you start the truck in single-digit Celsius regularly.
- 15W-40 mineral, fine for an engine with 250,000+ km that's used to thicker oil. Don't switch a high-km engine that's been on mineral oil straight to thin synthetic without a reason.
Filter: Toyota OEM 90915-30002-8T. Aftermarket equivalents: Ryco Z79A, Wix 57524, Mann W 712/52.
Critical reminder: The 1KZ-TE is famous for cracking heads when the cooling system isn't maintained. While you've got the truck up on stands, glance at the radiator, hoses, and coolant level. A clean oil change schedule won't save a head that's been overheated. See our 1KZ-TE engine guide for the full reliability story.
5VZ-FE 3.4 V6, the easier change
The 5VZ-FE V6 is a petrol motor, which makes it the simpler of the three to service.
Capacity: ~5.2L (5.5 US quarts) with filter change. The 4Runner crowd will tell you anywhere from 5.0L to 5.5L depending on dipstick read, start at 4.8L, run the engine, then top up.
Grade: Modern recommendation is 5W-30 API SN/SP. The factory spec from the late '90s was 10W-30, both work fine, the 5W-30 just gives you better cold start.
Filter: Toyota OEM 90915-YZZD2 or equivalent. Aftermarket: Ryco Z9, Wix 57045.
This engine is the one to recommend to a mate who wants a Surf without diesel maintenance hassle. It uses no special tooling for an oil change and has none of the diesel-specific quirks.
3L diesel, the older brother of the 1KZ-TE
If you've got a pre-1993 LN130, you've likely got the 3L, a 2.8L naturally aspirated diesel. Simpler than the 1KZ-TE, no turbo to worry about, and (oddly enough) a more bulletproof reputation.
Capacity: 6.5L with filter change.
Grade: 15W-40 or 10W-40 diesel-spec oil, API CD or better. Same logic as the 1KZ-TE on synthetic vs mineral.
Filter: Same Toyota oil filter pattern as the 1KZ-TE, 90915-30002-8T or aftermarket equivalents listed above.
When to change: real-world service intervals
Toyota's original spec was 10,000 km / 6 months. Here's what we actually recommend after a decade of working on these trucks:
- 5,000 km, daily-driver in heavy traffic, regular towing, off-road use, beach driving, or any 1KZ-TE over 250,000 km
- 7,500 km, mixed daily/weekend use on a healthy 1KZ-TE or 5VZ-FE
- 10,000 km, road-only, freeway-heavy, with full synthetic oil
If you're not driving much, change once a year regardless of kilometres. Old oil in a sitting engine is worse than fresh oil getting worked.
Where to source parts
For an oil and filter change you'll need: the right oil (5–8L depending on engine), a new oil filter, a fresh sump plug crush washer, a 14mm socket and an oil filter wrench. Most of this is available from your local parts shop, but if you'd rather source from someone who knows the platform:
- 3rd gen owners (KZN185 / VZN185, 96–02): the Performance Parts & Maintenance collection is the one to browse, filters, fluids, and service items for the 1KZ-TE and 5VZ-FE.
- 2nd gen owners (KZN130 / LN130, 90–95): check the broader Hilux Surf Parts collection and the Genuine OEM Parts for 2nd Gen listings for service-grade items.
