A grille swap is the ten-minute version of a facelift: it is the first thing anyone sees, it hides two decades of stone chips, and it needs nothing but a screwdriver and a trim tool. It is also the part people most often order wrong, because the 3rd Gen ran three different grille designs in seven years. Here is the whole picture, including the fit notes the eBay listings will not tell you.
Which grille does your truck take?
- 96-98 (pre-facelift): the narrow opening. Two options in our catalog: the Grey Grille at $83, a budget reproduction that suits a driver, and the Chrome Grille Assembly at $113 with the emblem provision for the factory badge.
- 99-00: the facelift brought its own short-lived grille. We do not currently stock it; the 01-02 design does not swap back, so check your year before ordering.
- 01-02: the final design, on one listing with two finishes: textured black at $103 or chrome shell with primed insert at $113.
What the finishes mean in person
Textured black is the factory look for most 01-02 trucks and hides gravel rash best. The chrome shell has a primed center insert, which is meant to be painted: color-match it to the truck or go satin black for the two-tone look. Primed means primed, not finished; budget a rattle can or an hour at the paint shop. The Grey Grille wears the factory light-gray plastic tone of the mid-90s trucks, so on a faded truck it can actually look more correct than a fresh black part.
Honest fit expectations
These are aftermarket reproductions, and buyer feedback across thousands of sales is consistent: the fit is good, and the price is a fraction of dealer parts, but expect one or two clips to need patience. The plastic tabs on your truck are 25 years old and brittle, so work slowly, start the top edge first, and never force a corner in cold weather. If a clip position seems slightly off, seat the rest and come back to it; they nearly always pull true. Five careful minutes at install time is the entire difference between a perfect result and a snapped tab.
