DRL LED Kit Install Guide

The DRL kit is two LED lights and a small controller. The lights come on automatically when the engine starts and dim or switch off when your headlights are on. Fitting is mostly about finding a good spot for the lights and getting four wires connected.

Fitting it, step by step

Step 1: Find a spot for the lights

Pick a position in the front bumper or grille where the lights face forward. You may need to take the front bumper off to get good access. Make sure they go in the right way up.

Step 2: Mount the lights

Fix the brackets and adjust the angle so both lights point straight ahead and match each other.

Step 3: Mount the controller

Find a dry, protected place in the engine bay for the controller, away from heat and anything that moves. Run the wiring neatly, keep it well clear of the exhaust manifold and turbo, and secure it with cable ties.

Step 4: Connect the wires

See the table below, then test before you refit the bumper.

Which wire goes where

Wire Connects to What it does
Red Ignition (ACC) Turns the DRLs on when the engine runs
White Headlight positive Dims or switches off the DRLs when the headlights are on
Yellow / blue Indicator positive Works with your indicators
Black Earth Ground

Optional: powering it from a fuse tap

Not included in the kit. A fuse tap and the extra fuses it needs are sold separately at most auto parts stores.

A fuse tap is a tidy way to get an ignition feed for the red wire without cutting into factory wiring. It plugs into a slot in your fuse box and gives you a second, fused wire to connect to.

  1. Pick a fuse in the fuse box that's only live when the key is on.
  2. Pull that fuse out and check its rating.
  3. Fit that original fuse into the fuse tap, plus a second fuse for the DRLs. Check the fuse tap's instructions for which slot is which and what rating to use.
  4. Crimp the fuse tap's lead onto the red wire, then plug the fuse tap into the slot.
  5. If the red wire won't reach the fuse box, extend it with wire of the same size.

This is just one way to do it. Joining onto an ignition wire directly works too.

Good to know

  • DRLs don't replace your headlights or fog lights.
  • If the lights flicker, check your charging voltage. Too much voltage can cause flicker or damage the LEDs.
  • Check the rules for daytime running lights where you live before you fit them.
  • If you're unsure about wiring, have an auto electrician fit them.
